Johan Bos Interning @ Ballistic Arts

On March 19th, I got in my car and drove away from the downtown core where most of my peers are doing their internships at companies located in the area. That morning we had snow and I had to get my truck into 4 wheel drive to get to Ballistic Arts safely in Burnaby.

Ballistic Arts is a full-service creative agency with departments in graphic design, website development, video production and photography. They are different in the way they refer to their studio

as an asylum and their clients as patients.

That morning I got thrown right into the fire at the daily meeting. I had to lead the meeting with these questions: What is good this morning? What are you working on? What doesn’t work? Word of the day? After our introductions to everyone, it was straight to work.

I started updating some of the WordPress sites that Ballistic Arts manages for some of their clients. I started with some simple updates to the Robson Communication site. I had to get into the WordPress theme and I found out that I still have a lot to learn about the WordPress way of doing things. My focus is on WordPress development so I have a basic understanding of the WordPress core but the sites that Ballistic Arts builds are much bigger than the five-page site we built in class. Super excited to learn more about the way of building a proper theme.

My second assignment was designing a home page for a charity site. The site was about 20 people going to Costa Rica to run 230 km six days through the jungle, to raise awareness for www.imagine1day.com. The first design that I showed and got feed back on was flat and uninspiring. The next day I went back to the design table and got some positive criticism. I finished a home page that I was very happy with. I knew that my design went with other designs to the client, and was excited to find out after the weekend that my design was picked!

Overall, the last two weeks have been a great experience.
