Johan Bos @ Ballistic Arts – Best Practices

At Ballistic Arts there are two major teams: the design room and the development room. There is a sales team but they are 90% out of the office making sales to keep us busy. Every morning there is a meeting with all of the members in the office. This is the time when we tell each other what we are working on and how far we are along with our projects. This is also the time for suggestions on how to make things better.

Interaction between the department is easy. Just get off your chair and walk over to the person. The atmosphere is friendly and easy going. On Wednesday there is a peer-to-peer meeting where one of the members has to present something that they think is hot or new in the industry. I think this is very helpful and I really enjoy this peer-to-peer interaction.

The company’s core values are: Potential, Building Strong Relationships, Cause and Effect, Tenacity, Fuck Yeah! I will talk about two of the core values. One isĀ  “Building Strong Relationships”. Because you are working eight hours a day together you have to have good relationships with each other. The work atmosphere is like that at Ballistic. The other core value I need to talk about is “Fuck Yeah!” You have that moment of great pleasure when you have been working hard on a problem then you suddenly see the solution; that’s when you have the “Fuck Yeah!” moment.

Best Practices: For me it is about how to write code the right way. You get some direction in class but you will develop your own style. When working in a team it’s not only you that is reading the code. This is the area I learned a lot in over the last couple of weeks.

Time planning: In the morning I talk to peer and ask if they have any work for me. If so they send me email with the work order and description of the project. They I can plan my day but there always times when you have to jump in and get stuff done before the end of the day.
