Kate Makarow: Intern @ Idea Rebel
It’s hard to believe that my internship is already one third over. The first 2 weeks have really flown by. I’m interning at Idea Rebel, which is a digital agency in Gastown. They work with some pretty cool clients like Electronic Arts, Quiksilver and the PGA Tour.
For the past two weeks I’ve been working on developing a game in Objective C. I didn’t know any Objective C prior to starting at Idea Rebel but I dove in head first and have learned a lot. I’ve been doing a lot of work adding the UI to the game both with Xcode’s Interface Builder and programatically. The team at Idea Rebel has been really great and supportive and I’ve particularity enjoyed working closely with Stephan and Shannon.
The transition from classroom to work environment has been pretty smooth for me. There are clearly major differences between the school environment and the workplace but one thing I’m glad to see has carried over is › Continue reading
Geoff Thierman Interns @ FCV
I’ve been spending my six weeks of internship at FCV, on the visual design team. FCV was my first choice so I was pretty excited that I was accepted to do an internship there. FCV is an award-winning digital marketing agency that does work for a broad range of clients in the tourism, financial, and retail industries.
Day 1
I hate first days. I was really nervous. Everyone was really nice though, and I spent the day familiarizing myself with my work area and quietly observing the workings of a professional agency.
Week 1
The first week was hectic as a site for a client was about to go live. I was tasked with sourcing images from stock image sites for the different sections of this client’s website. Super easy task right? Wrong. I spent hour after hour pouring over images on Getty. I’d select a few images, send them to my project manager, › Continue reading
Eugene Or Interns at Rethink – Part 1
For this 6-week internship I have been given the chance to work as a front-end developer and designer at Rethink Communications. Started in 1999, Rethink sees themselves as an “ideas company” rather than an ad agency.
They specialize in all sorts of communication that include advertising and design, online experiences, store designs and staff uniforms. Their existing clientele include organizations such as Mr. Lube, A&W, Coast Capital Savings, BCAA, Bell Mobility, and Playland just to name a few.
During the first week of the internship I was able to see and experience many things that I had requested initially in the letter of understanding. I spent a few hours on the first day getting used to where projects are located on their local server as well setting up the laptop to my comfort level.
Adam Neilson, Head of Digital Production at Rethink invited me to a client meeting via phone conference as well as a few internal meetings in which I was › Continue reading
Diana Thomson: Intern @ Tidal Interactive
What an interesting transition going from a full time post secondary education back into a full time nine to five position. It has been both exciting and sad, new yet familiar, and of course – exhausting and challenging.
I have been working at an agency in downtown Vancouver called Tidal Interactive doing a number of different things including Project Management, Information Architecture, and Usability Testing, Reporting and Recommendations. Tidal tends to work with large organizations such as Universities and Government organizations. They tend to take on projects that include web and mobile websites, intranet websites, and heuristics usability testing. I am working closely with different people depending on the task, however so far it has been mostly with the Account Managers and Project Managers.
Parker Busswood at East Side Games – Part 1
Over the past two weeks, I have been interning with East Side Games, one of the top social and mobile gaming studios in Vancouver. I got off to a late start due to illness, but I’ve had a chance to get settled in and get started on some interesting projects.
East Side Games was founded in July 2011, and has launched several titles, including their flagship Facebook game Pot Farm. More recently, the studio has another social team working on Zombinis, which is currently exclusive to the Google+ platform and will be moving to Facebook and standalone in the coming weeks. A few mobile games are also in the works, including Ruby Skies for iPad, and NomNom Combo for iPhone, which just launched recently. It’s an exciting time to get into the company while so many new products are in the works, and I feel fortunate to have opportunities to get involved with many of these projects during my internship.

Diana Thomson on Emerging Technology: Mobile Game Strategy & Outcomes
In Emerging Technologies I was most intrigued by the idea that “somebody actually thought of that idea..” . It was a bit mind blowing at times to conceptualize the creativity and unlimited imagination of these people. This same intrigue occurs with the creativity and thought process surrounding mobile game design and development.
During this class, the most exciting part for me was creating a game using the Corona Platform. During this process I began researching what sort of features make a successful game and learned that the most successful games include the following features:

Directed Study – CSU Usability Testing
For my directed study project this year, I’m conducting online usability testing and surveying to get feedback on the Capilano Students’ Union website, and using the results to generate a revised information architecture and visual design strategy for the organization. I have had the pleasure of working with the CSU over the past several months as a student representative to Senate and as a member of their Board of Directors, and I’m looking forward to giving back by leading a branding and website redevelopment project with them over the next several months.
