Eugene Or Interns at Rethink – Part 1
For this 6-week internship I have been given the chance to work as a front-end developer and designer at Rethink Communications. Started in 1999, Rethink sees themselves as an “ideas company” rather than an ad agency.
They specialize in all sorts of communication that include advertising and design, online experiences, store designs and staff uniforms. Their existing clientele include organizations such as Mr. Lube, A&W, Coast Capital Savings, BCAA, Bell Mobility, and Playland just to name a few.
During the first week of the internship I was able to see and experience many things that I had requested initially in the letter of understanding. I spent a few hours on the first day getting used to where projects are located on their local server as well setting up the laptop to my comfort level.
Adam Neilson, Head of Digital Production at Rethink invited me to a client meeting via phone conference as well as a few internal meetings in which I was › Continue reading
Diana Thomson: Intern @ Tidal Interactive
What an interesting transition going from a full time post secondary education back into a full time nine to five position. It has been both exciting and sad, new yet familiar, and of course – exhausting and challenging.
I have been working at an agency in downtown Vancouver called Tidal Interactive doing a number of different things including Project Management, Information Architecture, and Usability Testing, Reporting and Recommendations. Tidal tends to work with large organizations such as Universities and Government organizations. They tend to take on projects that include web and mobile websites, intranet websites, and heuristics usability testing. I am working closely with different people depending on the task, however so far it has been mostly with the Account Managers and Project Managers.

TypeButter!
Designers love type: they love to style it, they love to set it. They pour all their aesthetic sense and attention to detail into making type great. So why don’t they love web type? Maybe it’s because the way that browsers set type tends to, well, suck. But now: TypeButter to the rescue! Beautiful kerning with no work! What a great idea.
Can Tastemel’s Emerging Tech Experience
Emerging technology for me is the advancement, innovation, and turning something existing into something cool, contemporary. It is leveraging technologies to build something new.

My experience with emerging tech at school started with Lua programming language framework Corona SDK.
It is a mobile application development environment. › Continue reading
Buttons Are a Hack
Yes, it’s real – but as a knife, it’s a total failure: more of a cry for simplicity than anything. A great take-away from Josh Clark’s presentation Buttons Are a Hack; check out the slides here:

Johan Bos: 3 Interesting Examples of Emerging Technology
1. Sporty Superhero Cycle Jacket that boasts “intelligent” sensors and dynamic LEDs
This cycle jacket integrates 64 RGB LEDs into its stretchable, wearable circuit board. The makers of the jackets are saying this jacket will make the user safer on the road. The jacket has variety of patterns that are been controlled by the user position and movement. If the user turns a corner the sensors in the jacket trigger and will flash the LED on the side that the user is turning. The jacket also notices if the user is slowing down and will change the colour of the LEDs on the back of the jacket to red so it appears › Continue reading
Diana Thomson on Emerging Technology: Mobile Game Strategy & Outcomes
In Emerging Technologies I was most intrigued by the idea that “somebody actually thought of that idea..” . It was a bit mind blowing at times to conceptualize the creativity and unlimited imagination of these people. This same intrigue occurs with the creativity and thought process surrounding mobile game design and development.
During this class, the most exciting part for me was creating a game using the Corona Platform. During this process I began researching what sort of features make a successful game and learned that the most successful games include the following features:
What does emerging technology mean to Eugene Or?
To me, emerging technologies is anything that is new or up and coming in the digital industry. These are advances in development which eventually lead to innovations in the way we interact with the environment around us. Whether it is real-world or digital, communication, videos, photos, ebooks, mobile devices, etc. are affected within this emerging technology space. To immerse into these experiences, open source platforms such as Corona SDK allow us as creative individuals to see what others have done, copy it, build on top of, or create brand new experiences that push the limits of interaction design.

That being said, innovation does not exist without challenges. Prior to the INTE 213 class with Dave Olsson, I had never built anything for a mobile device besides designing and developing web apps to be responsive. For my project, I decided to try to replicate an “Angry Birds” like game by building on top of what Beebe Games (Jonathan Beebe and wife Biffy) created, Ghosts Vs. Monsters. These seasoned Corona SDK developers were able to roll out the game within 36 hours (crazy right?); we had less than 2 weeks along with very little or no knowledge whatsoever in LUA scripting. Being a designer first and developer second, I was only able to swap out the characters and replace them with my own creations.
