Sizing Type on the Web

The best approach for sizing type on the web continues to be debated: pixels? Ems? Furlongs? It’s good to have a guru like Ethan Marcotte weigh in with a thorough discussion of current best-practice thinking. Oh, and he also covers the new kid on the block: rems!

Kate Makarow on Emerging Technology

Emerging technology is an interesting space to work in because you are often working with products and technologies that are not fully fleshed out or developed. To me, emerging tech is akin to cooking a batch of meatballs and then throwing them at the wall and seeing which ones stick. You might read about or experiment with an incredible new technology or product that you think will really impact our world but at the end of the day is doesn’t stick and something else does. I like the freedom and the inquisitive spirit associated with working with emerging technology. Whether or not your project is ever fully realized or ever fully works, you gain a huge amount of knowledge from the experience itself.

Can Tastemel’s Emerging Tech Experience

Emerging technology for me is the advancement, innovation, and turning something existing into something cool, contemporary. It is leveraging technologies to build something new.

Kristof Lenart’s Mobile Games & Emerging Technology Experience

During the last semester we have had an amazing opportunity to work with mobile applications and games in one of the program’s new courses; Emerging Tech. We were introduced into this fast paced environment of constantly shifting and evolving bleeding edge technologies. We worked with the Corona Software Development Kit (SDK), which was built for mobile app creation. It significantly reduced the development time and learning curve for building applications and games.

Parker Busswood on Emerging Technologies and Mobile Gaming

Over the past several weeks, I have been working on a mobile game project for iOS/Android as part of my Emerging Technologies course. It’s been great learning about the latest and greatest techniques for web and mobile development, and working on building my own app that integrates some of these practices has been a fantastic experience.

Working with emerging technologies forces you to be a creative problem-solver in order to find your own solutions to many of the issues you come across. › Continue reading

Diana Thomson on Emerging Technology: Mobile Game Strategy & Outcomes

In Emerging Technologies I was most intrigued by the idea that “somebody actually thought of that idea..” . It was a bit mind blowing at times to conceptualize the creativity and unlimited imagination of these people. This same intrigue occurs with the creativity and thought process surrounding mobile game design and development.

Penguin Empire 2

During this class, the most exciting part for me was creating a game using the Corona Platform. During this process I began researching what sort of features make a successful game and learned that the most successful games include the following features:

How Not To Do It

Let’s say you’re a Vancouver web design company and you want to promote your services: you want to impress potential clients, show off what you’ve done for past clients, and stand out in a competitive field. Here’s what not to do:

  1. Have a “coming soon” website
  2. Use tables for layout
  3. Use no CSS at all
  4. Use in-line JavaScript
  5. Have your site identity and contact information inaccessible to search engines, using images without alt text and Flash respectively

In other words, pretend it’s still 1999. Impressive!

Facebook and iOS

http://www.adweek.com/news/technology/facebooks-top-secret-iphone-platform-132598

Looks like the legions that don’t like the 30% hit on sales are growing–this time, its Facebook that’s chiming in with HTML5 webOS based suite of applications for iOS.  These apps, which are basically optimized HTML pages employing Javascript, HTML5 and CSS, don’t need to be provisioned (installed) through the appstore, but instead they are viewed through Safari, the native web browser.  When created well, the experience is often hard to distinguish from a native Objective-C iOS app.

In the Emerging Technologies class during 2011, we used a hybrid of HTML and iOS calls to make applications.  Facebook and the Financial Times are merely using HTML5′s capabilities to render their app experiences.  The signficant upside to this, other than avoiding the sales commission, is that the apps will be viewable on other devices that support HTML5.

From a business and a development point of view, this is a prudent call and we’ll continue to see companies put chinks in the armour of the AppStore’s commission model.
