Space Buggy Mobile Game – Gameplay Video
This game is for a part of the Emerging Technologies class assignment.
Given time for the assignment was 1 week and the purpose was to get familiar with the Lua framework Corona SDK mobile development environment and mobile game basics.
Game graphics and the code base of the game are designed and tweaked by Jesse Chan, Llorin Keashly and Jon Tastemel.
How Not To Do It
Let’s say you’re a Vancouver web design company and you want to promote your services: you want to impress potential clients, show off what you’ve done for past clients, and stand out in a competitive field. Here’s what not to do:
- Have a “coming soon” website
- Use tables for layout
- Use no CSS at all
- Use in-line JavaScript
- Have your site identity and contact information inaccessible to search engines, using images without alt text and Flash respectively
In other words, pretend it’s still 1999. Impressive!
Foundation Framework
The people at Zurb have released their framework for rapid prototyping and production for any kind of device—looks really cool:
Facebook and iOS

Looks like the legions that don’t like the 30% hit on sales are growing–this time, its Facebook that’s chiming in with HTML5 webOS based suite of applications for iOS. These apps, which are basically optimized HTML pages employing Javascript, HTML5 and CSS, don’t need to be provisioned (installed) through the appstore, but instead they are viewed through Safari, the native web browser. When created well, the experience is often hard to distinguish from a native Objective-C iOS app.
In the Emerging Technologies class during 2011, we used a hybrid of HTML and iOS calls to make applications. Facebook and the Financial Times are merely using HTML5′s capabilities to render their app experiences. The signficant upside to this, other than avoiding the sales commission, is that the apps will be viewable on other devices that support HTML5.
From a business and a development point of view, this is a prudent call and we’ll continue to see companies put chinks in the armour of the AppStore’s commission model.
Web Designers vs Web Developers

Luke Lau’s Internship Report #2
The last two weeks internship was fun, nerve-racking, and satisfying. Being the only web developer on staff is challenging. Asking a couple external resources for advice was a lot harder than I thought. They explained the options but they never provide a solid direction. They all say, “It’s up to you. Do what you are comfortable with.” Well, being new in the field (hence, interning) comments like these are definitely not helpful. I thought experienced professionals would be more forthcoming with their wisdoms / guidance.
Real-life lesson: Make my own decisions on how things will be done. Rely on gut-instincts, past experience, and lessons learned from school.
The past 2 weeks was not all work. I got a chance to play a few games. Though, before I was able to play, I had to figure out how to make a Hori Real Arcade Pro 3 game controller manipulate the mouse and or the keyboard in a Microsoft Windows 7 touch-screen PC. This particular game controller was made specifically for Sony PS3 and does not come with drivers or documentation. After Googling forum after forum and trying a few emulation software, Success.

Hi
I wanted to share these to conference happening in Vancouver in May

E-Learning Update part 3
This weekend was again back to the e-learning website. I finish all the editing for the videos and photos.
Posted the videos on Vimeo so that the videos were save from my computer. If my computer would crash all my hard work was on the web.
Over the week I toke some time to start coding my website. This weekend I plan to work on my photo page and video page.
That included 22 images that had to be posted on the photo page. Wanna to use some Java Script to create a nice photo experience.
Found some code that was free to use on the web called Shadowbox media player see image below.(http://www.shadowbox-js.com/)
Got that working with not to much problems.
On the video page there are three differed video and I didn’t wanted that if you choose the next video the hole page had to reload.
The idea was that just the video got changed and with the help of java scrip and jQuery I got that done.
So now when the page get loaded all three videos get loaded but with the hide() and show() effect only one at the time will get showed.
Special thanks to Matthew A, Jorgen H and Kate M for all their patients.
So most of the functionally is done now it time to plug in the text content.
Launch date got delayed because of later due date for the class
New launch date is April 1,2011
Thanks JOhan
What makes Node different?
Since the framework was built for the commonly used JavaScript, the barriers to entry are remarkably low, and the reasons for choosing Node to build apps — especially low-latency, real-time apps — are increasingly compelling. Not just for gaming, the information architects should check out Mockingbird where designer to client collaboration just may be ready to take wing. If this mockingbird can sing, is it time for Omnigraffle to move on over? More on Node from our good friends a Mashable…
CSS Floats Demystified
If there’s one web-code thing that makes people’s eyes cross, it’s the way floats work in CSS. Which is not surprising, given how weird it really is. Over the years, several people have taken on the task of demystifying floats – here’s the latest attempt, by Noah Stokes over at A List Apart:
